Silly hack that I didn't finish until about an hour after the hack contest™. (Pete Helme trademark) Typical.
Some of us at Apple were getting sick of having these large, luxurient monitors and having to go from one side of the monitor to the other to access System and app menus. Wouldn't it be nice if they were all on the same side like the good ol' System 6 days?
So was born SwapMenus (because they're there). This hack allows you to point, click and drag a menu from one menu space to another. For example, you can drag one of the System menus (Help, process, Script etc.) to the left side of the menu bar and drop it there. It will then move to where you dropped it. You can also get silly and rearrange any menu on the left hand (application) side. Just click and drag it to the spot you want it.
To Use:
Install this extension and reboot and pray. Hold down the command & option keys and click on the center of a menu item. You'll see the cursor change into a cross hair if you made a successful click. Now keep holding down the mouse and the keys and drag the mouse on top of another menu you want that menu to appear in front of. Release the mouse and the menu should have moved. This version is a bit flakey so it may not always work, keep trying and you'll get the hang of the exactness needed for the dragging.
What it doesn't do:
it doesn't allow you to drag app menus on the left to the System menu side on the right. But you can drag the System menus back to the right hand side and rearrange them among themselves (i.e. you can swap the process and Help menus). There isn't a whole lot of user feedback to be had here either.
Bugs:
When the System menus have been dragged to the left hand side clicking in the menu bar does not produce any hiliting. I think I know why I just haven't fixed it yet. There is also a strange bug that will cause multiple process menus to appear occasionally. As soon as this happens, QUIT IMMEDIATELY, things just get worse from there if you don't. :)
If people like using this (ha.) I'll make up a new version that remembers where you put what for each application. Also remember that each process keeps it's own copy of the menu list, so moving menus in one app will not move those in another.
